Why We Voted Yes?

The Concord Finance Committee, the Concord Select Board and the Concord League Of Women Voters ALL recommended a YES VOTE on February 16th because...

THEY KNEW A FAILED VOTE WOULD HAVE TRIGGERED A 6-9 MONTH DELAY AND $5.5M IN NEW FEES. CONSTRUCTION COSTS WOULD HAVE KEPT RISING DURING THIS DELAY, ADDING EVEN MORE TAXPAYER BURDEN. AND ALL THIS ASSUMED THE ENTIRE PROJECT DID NOT COLLAPSE, WHICH IT EASILY COULD HAVE. THIS WOULD HAVE SET US BACK YEARS AND MOST-LIKELY COST THE TOWN MILLIONS MORE.

Some background: This new middle school was voted for by a wide and diverse margin in 2022 both at Special Town Meeting (est 95% Yes) and at the ballot box (by 80%). The recent January 19, 2023 Special Town Meeting vote for the additional spending easily passed again (est 90% Yes).

Three times, we have voted to support this project and now, on 2/16, we needed to go to the ballot box one last time to VOTE YES and allow the project to finally move forward.

The tax implications of this vote (to override prop 2 1/2 and OK the additional funds already voted-for at STM) were (up to) $74/year/median household, or about $6/month.
